Production Notes:

The Heckler & Koch-produced series of MP (Maschinenpistole or 'Machine Pistol') is by far the most popular post-war submachine gun. It is featured by a multitude of special forces, police and army units the world over and is a favorite because of it's compact size, stopping power and reliability.

The base HK MP5 is based on H&K's success with it's automatic rifle line and shares a variety of internal mechanic components that have made those lines so successful in their roles. The base construction consists of steel and plastic, with base models featuring only automatic and single-shot firing modes. A selective three-round burst is available as an option, as is a silencer which changes the designation to the 'SD' series (detailed below) of which there are six versions. Scopes and laser sights can be fitted along with the existing standard fixed metal sights.

The HK MP5 'Kurz' model is a shortened variant allowing for compact mobility in extreme close quarters. Several other variants exist to chamber various ammunition calibers (some designed specifically for United States agencies such as the FBI).

Overall, the HK MP5 is the weapon of choice for most European forces and the United States in terms of close-quarters man-stopping power. More notable users include the United States Navy SEALs special forces, the German GSG9 group and the British SAS special forces.

The HK MP5 series is also popular amongst civil protection forces such as police and special SWAT units.

Variants of the base HK MP system include:

HK MP5A2 - Fixed plastic stock.
HK MP5A3 - Telescoping metal stock.
HK MP5K - Kurz variant; Special short version with no buttstock and features forward grip.
HK MP5SD1 - 'SD' indicates 'silenced' variant; No buttstock.
HK MP5SD2 - Fixed plastic butt
HK MP5SD3 - Sliding retractable butt
HK MP5SD4 - SD1 variant with three round bust capability.
HK MP5SD5 - SD2 variant with three round burst capability.
HK MP5SD6 - SD3 variant with three round burst capability.
HK MP5 SF - Only single shot feature (US FBI requirement).
HK MP5/10 - Chambered for 10mm Auto cartridge.
HK MP5/40 - Chambered for 40mm Smith & Wesson cartridge.
